Guus Janssen / Calliope Tsoupaki
Pianist Gerard Bouwhuis: This members’ concert is the perfect opportunity to give the 2nd premiere of a great solo piece for piano by Guus Janssen: 14 variations on a concealed theme (I will explain the title at the concert.)
It doesn’t happen very often that the piano repertoire is enriched by a new masterpiece. Because that’s what I think of it. Guus Janssen plays an extremely sophisticated game with the concealed theme (only a foretaste of half of it sounds at the beginning) and after half an hour, after many wanderings and vistas, the (simple) theme sounds is its original form.
I recommend you go and listen! Because then you will also hear the piece Dream by john Cage and an early work by Calliope Tsoupaki for the unusual combination of double bass and viola entitled ‘when I was 27’. About it, Calliope writes: “The viola and double bass transform into a giant fantasy instrument similar to a viola da gamba, resulting in a fusion of low viola and high bass-a symbolic self-reflection. There is even a brief birthday moment in the piece, a small gift to myself, since my birthday is on 27 May.”
