‘Old Dutch Christmas’ stands for an warm evening of old Dutch nostalgia. The famous Pictures of
an Exhibition by Mussorgsky will be presented on a beautiful selection of paintings by the great
Dutch Old Masters, such as Melchior d’Hondecoeter, Frans Hals, Jeroen Bosch and Rembrandt. The returning Promenade in the piece will be imagined on skates with the famous winter scenes of Avercamp, like a real Frisian ‘Elfstedentocht’.
The classic melody “O du lieber Augustin”, in Holland well-known from a Dutch ‘Sinterklaas’
celebration-song, is still popular in the 20th century, with a medley by Bing Crosby or the Thanks
Giving song “Fat Turkeys”. Ciconia Consort plays Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s Variations on this
melody. Furthermore, the audience is immersed in the real ‘Dutch sound’ of the composers Willem van Otterloo and Hendrik Andriessen.
