Henk Badings: Maria
Chamber Choir Vox Urbis sings the marvellous but seldom played “Maria” by Henk Badings, a cycle of 14 songs for mixed choir, SAT soli, flute and cello.
Vox Urbis takes you on a journey into Badings colourful world where we get to know Maria in many facets. We see her as a girl not sure what to do with the Angel’s message, as an expectant youg woman worrying about the fate of her child, and as a brand new mother cradling her newborn baby. But also fleeing for government violence, and later as the intensely sad mother mourning her crucified son. Then to end with her as the approachable Holy Mother, whom we ask for help trying to resist our weaknesses.
Henk Badings brings it all together in a warm and emotional masterpiece, of which you afterwards think “why do we so rarely hear this piece?”
Apart from “Maria” Vox Urbis will sing three motets by Julius Röntgen, sparkling gems from the huge oeuvre of this composer.
