Jakub Polaczyk: Chroset No.9: Two Harings Totems for Flute Ensemble

Chroset No. 9: Two Haring’s Totems is another one from the cycle of works paying
tribute to history. It was written in memory of the NYC street historical artist Keith
Haring from the 80-ties. Piece reflects his art and is inspired by the structure of
totems (used in Native American cultures) that also brought inspiration to Keith
Harings’ works. It consists of 2 movements: 1. Radiant Baby (wooden totem) and is
mainly for recorders, 2. Acrobats (totem in metal) is in contrary mainly for concert
flutes. Titles refers to the figures names used by Haring.
This piece was written as a request for my dear flutist and friend Renata Guzik
for the flute ensemble with small percussion instruments (one rainmaker, wooden
and metal claves) for the premiere in summer of 2023 at the Flute Festival in
Mexico in Ixtapa. I hope Keith would enjoy my musical setting as my respond to
his street works, that I often pass while working in the East Village, where he also
used to live his short life. This year he would have been 65.
