Jakub Polaczyk: Withers

Withers for alto flute and clarinet was composed in 2021 and completed on September 11, 2021. The work is dedicated to the memory of the victims of 9/11, marking the 20th anniversary of the attacks. Conceived as a textural journey, the piece unfolds as a shifting sonic cloud formed by the two instruments, gradually ascending toward the extreme upper registers, culminating in a final “skyline” gesture. Withers was premiered in October 2021 at the International Woodwind Conference at the Academy of Art in Szczecin, Poland, performed by Renata Guzik (flute) and Krzysztof Krzyżewski (clarinet). The work was later performed in New York City in 2023 by members of the S.E.M. Ensemble, Gleb Kanasevich and Roberta Michel.
