Jan-Peter de Graaff: Battleground
Battleground by Jan-Peter de Graaff in a theatrical project ‘A Block of Flats with a Thousand Windows’ at the Oranjewoud Festival.
The daughter of a war photographer reflects on her father’s work, discovering what truly drives him. Jan-Peter de Graaff’s acoustic composition is the darkest of the six; at times static, then suddenly surging with movement and energy.
Step into ‘A Block of Flats with a Thousand Windows’, a six-part theatrical miniseries where the walls vibrate with music, imagination, and human stories. Visionary composer and creative mind Primo Ish-Hurwitz (2001) breathes new life into Joseph Haydn’s six iconic Op. 20 string quartets by pairing them with brand-new works from six of today’s leading Dutch composers. This is achieved through the sampling of old and new material—a technique rare in classical music, yet common in genres like hip-hop.
The Chaos String Quartet, alongside actress Ariane Schluter and writer Joke van Leeuwen, weaves a compelling world where past and present merge. Across six episodes, a timeless story unfolds as sound, language, performance, and emotion converge and strengthen one another.
