Jan van Gilse: Nonet

Jan van Gilse: Nonet

Nonet by Jan van Gilse on the program of De Bezetting Speelt in De Machinist, venue in Rotterdam.

The Rotterdam composer Jan van Gilse studied in Germany and thus developed a German-oriented style, in line with Mahler’s music. This led to biting criticism from fellow composer Willem Pijper, who himself advocated a more French-impressionistic style and called Van Gilses’ contributions “destroying musical life”. DBS strongly disagrees with this and, as a true Rotterdam ensemble, likes to bring this music from oblivion back from oblivion.
