Joël Bons and Hendrik Andriessen in ‘Life is a Circle’
Life is a circle: the beginning is the end and the end is a new beginning. The evening opens with Wagner’s light and hopeful Siegfried Idyll. A personal birthday present to his wife, who heard a bird sing during the birth of their son. Strauss’ gloomy, contemplative Metamorphoses closes the evening: hope, bloom, reflection and the end of the journey of life.
In between we celebrate existence, we look back and forward. The iconic works of Wagner and Strauss flank a special and new cello concerto by Joël Bons, which celebrates life in a festive and generous way. Specially written for the Residentie Orkest, and for soloist Lidy Blijdorp. This is followed by the Passion of Jesus, through the eyes of his mother: Miroir de Peine by Hendrik Andriessen, sung by soprano Klaartje van Veldhoven. Cellist Leonard Elschenbroich will conduct the evening, and use his expertise to lead Strauss’ iconic string piece.
