Joey Roukens: Distorted Fantasia (after J.P.Sweelinck)
The British conductor Duncan Ward, principal conductor of the South Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra since 2021, has chosen Elgar’s famous Enigma Variations as the culmination of a programme that opens with one of the most eclectic composers on the current compositional scene, Joey Roukens. His Distorted Fantasia, commissioned in 2021 by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Sweelinck Foundation, is a 21st-century reinterpretation of the Fantasia in the Dorian mode, SWwV 259 by the great Dutch composer and organist Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, who laid the foundations for European keyboard music around 1600. The German violinist Veronika Eberle completes this programme by performing Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto, premiered in 1936 in Barcelona after the composer’s death, as part of the programme of the International Society for Contemporary Music Festival.
