Joey Roukens: Distorted Fantasia (after J.P. Sweelinck)

Joey Roukens’ Distorted Fantasia (after J.P. Sweelinck) was composed in 2023 to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. This piece was commissioned by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and premiered under the baton of Maxim Emelyanychev. Roukens reimagines Sweelinck’s Fantasia in Doric Mode, SwWV 259, blending its historical essence with modern orchestral techniques, including innovative rhythms, harmonies, and textures. The work reflects Roukens’ eclectic style, characterized by merging traditional and contemporary influences into a vibrant orchestral palette.

Joey Roukens

His output includes orchestral works, ensemble works, chamber music, solo instrumental works and an opera. In his music Roukens strives to move away from modernist ways of thinking in search for a more eclectic and more direct idiom, without reverting to some naive neo-style. In doing so, the composer doesn’t shy away from the use of triads, tonal or diatonic harmonies, a regular rhythmic pulse, directness of expression, simplicity, references to popular music and vernacular culture, ‘stealing’ from the musical heritage of the past and the odd trivial turn.

Joey Roukens was born in Schiedam, the Netherlands, in 1982.

Leonard Guillaume Samama komt op 25 maart ter wereld in een muzikale joodse familie in Apeldoorn. Zijn moeder, Ans Samama-Polak, is een amateurcelliste en als oefentherapeut Mensendieck auteur van het boek 'Musiceren zonder pijn'. Zijn vader Sylvio is oprichter van de platenmaatschappij Iramac en een vooraanstaand impresario. De jonge Leo leert dwarsfluit spelen en begint in zijn tienerjaren al te componeren. Tijdens zijn studie Muziekwetenschap aan de Universiteit Utrecht (1970-1977) studeert hij enige jaren compositie bij Rudolf Escher. In 1975 schrijft hij met 'Tombeau concertant pour Frank Martin' voor twee violen en strijkorkest, zijn officiële opus 1. Met steun van een Rotarybeurs voltooit hij zijn studie aan de Universiteit van California in Los Angeles. Al tijdens deze studie geeft hij lezingen over de Nederlandse muziek van de twintigste eeuw.
