Peter I. Tchaikovsky: Symphony n. 4
Roukens, before starting to compose, fully immersed himself in the musical genius of the Jussen brothers. He was particularly struck by their ability to sound perfect together as a duo, like a super piano. This inspired him to write a concerto for a four-armed superpianist. The concerto features unison passages, which is a distinct Dutch characteristic. At times, the pianists follow each other in octaves, while at other times the melody goes back and forth at lightning speed. The concerto has a classical setup with fast corner sections and a slow middle section, and is written specifically for the body of the Jussens. It has a youthful and playful quality to it.
