Joey Roukens: Juncture

Every year, Calefax invites a well-known Dutch personality to the concert series Welcome to Calefaxland. Not a musician, but someone who loves music. But Ramsey Nasr, guest of this fourth edition, is no longer a melomaniac or a music lover: Ramsey is addicted. He currently owns around 12,000 classical CDs, and his house can no longer cope. The drama school – that must be where it all went wrong.

Calefax and Nasr take the audience on a journey from the bizarre Middle Ages, through touching Italian folk music, to the polyphony of the Renaissance, which captured Ramsey’s imagination. Finally, we tumble through Romanticism into the world of opera, ending with the grand infatuation Nasr conceived for a Soviet composer he still affectionately calls Shoske. Wherever Ramsey’s fascination takes him, he knows he has the support of Calefax: the adventurous reed players also make their own brilliant arrangements of existing music. In short, an evening full of Guillaume de Machaut, Gombert, Schumann, Puccini, Shostakovich and new works by Joey Roukens. And maybe Nasr himself will sing a song.
