Meet the new generation of top conductors.

Experience the climax of the International Conducting Competition Rotterdam! At the Grande Finale, the conductors will again work with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. This time the commissioned work of Joey Roukens Night Flight is central. The piece will be performed at the public rehearsal sessions 6 times by 6 conductors-finalists.

Joey Roukens

His output includes orchestral works, ensemble works, chamber music, solo instrumental works and an opera. In his music Roukens strives to move away from modernist ways of thinking in search for a more eclectic and more direct idiom, without reverting to some naive neo-style. In doing so, the composer doesn’t shy away from the use of triads, tonal or diatonic harmonies, a regular rhythmic pulse, directness of expression, simplicity, references to popular music and vernacular culture, ‘stealing’ from the musical heritage of the past and the odd trivial turn.

Joey Roukens was born in Schiedam, the Netherlands, in 1982.

Luc Brewaeys was born in 1959 in Mortsel (Belgium). He studied composition with André LAPORTE in Brussels, with Franco DONATONI in Siena (Italy) and with Brian FERNEYHOUGH in Darmstadt (Germany). From 1980 to 84 he had regular contacts with Iannis XENAKIS in Paris. He is also conductor, pianist and works since 1985 as recording producer at the VRT (Flemish Radio & Television).
