Joey Roukens: Night Flight
The Hebrew rhapsody Schelomo for cello and orchestra is full of stylistic elements from Jewish music. The cello represents the voice of King Solomon. Gary Hoffman is the dream soloist in Schelomo. One of the discoveries of the 2022 Biennale was Kabalevsky’s rarely played Second Cello Concerto. Kian Soltani gave a moving performance and takes up the challenge of emulating this experience.
The evening opens with recent work by the Dutch composer Joey Roukens. In Night Flight you as a listener are taken on a nighttime rollercoaster ride above a bustling city.
