Joey Roukens: Percussion Concerto

What appeals to Kalina Vladovska about percussion? The world of possibilities. Every percussion instrument is a new journey of discovery! The extremely versatile Percussion Concerto by Joey Roukens is therefore made for her. Drum set, tom tom, cowbell, congas, triangle, woodblock, cymbals… these are just a few of the thirty percussion instruments that appear in this composition for percussionist and large ensemble. In addition to this performance with the National Youth Orchestra conducted by Chloe Rooke, Kalina will perform a solo work for percussion.

In 2023 Kalina will be Young Artist in Residence of the Muziekzomer. The Bulgarian-born percussionist studied at the Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen, is pursuing a master’s degree at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, is an Academician at Slagwerk Den Haag and is part of the Youth Percussion Pool. It is clear that Kalina is making her way as the young percussionist of this moment.

Joey Roukens

His output includes orchestral works, ensemble works, chamber music, solo instrumental works and an opera. In his music Roukens strives to move away from modernist ways of thinking in search for a more eclectic and more direct idiom, without reverting to some naive neo-style. In doing so, the composer doesn’t shy away from the use of triads, tonal or diatonic harmonies, a regular rhythmic pulse, directness of expression, simplicity, references to popular music and vernacular culture, ‘stealing’ from the musical heritage of the past and the odd trivial turn.

Joey Roukens was born in Schiedam, the Netherlands, in 1982.

Maxim Shalygin: Khôra

Award-winning Ukrainian harpsichordist Dmytro Kokoshynskyy brings his programme Music for These Troubled Times to the third edition of Festival Le Rose, in the Galleria on the first floor of Villa Togni in Gussago. The evening is built around the live performance of Maxim Shalygin’s contemporary masterpiece, “Khôra” for solo harpsichord.

Luc Brewaeys was born in 1959 in Mortsel (Belgium). He studied composition with André LAPORTE in Brussels, with Franco DONATONI in Siena (Italy) and with Brian FERNEYHOUGH in Darmstadt (Germany). From 1980 to 84 he had regular contacts with Iannis XENAKIS in Paris. He is also conductor, pianist and works since 1985 as recording producer at the VRT (Flemish Radio & Television).

Leonard Guillaume Samama komt op 25 maart ter wereld in een muzikale joodse familie in Apeldoorn. Zijn moeder, Ans Samama-Polak, is een amateurcelliste en als oefentherapeut Mensendieck auteur van het boek 'Musiceren zonder pijn'. Zijn vader Sylvio is oprichter van de platenmaatschappij Iramac en een vooraanstaand impresario. De jonge Leo leert dwarsfluit spelen en begint in zijn tienerjaren al te componeren. Tijdens zijn studie Muziekwetenschap aan de Universiteit Utrecht (1970-1977) studeert hij enige jaren compositie bij Rudolf Escher. In 1975 schrijft hij met 'Tombeau concertant pour Frank Martin' voor twee violen en strijkorkest, zijn officiële opus 1. Met steun van een Rotarybeurs voltooit hij zijn studie aan de Universiteit van California in Los Angeles. Al tijdens deze studie geeft hij lezingen over de Nederlandse muziek van de twintigste eeuw.
