Johan Wagenaar: Voorspel ‘De Cid’

Discover the full-bodied sound of tomorrow’s musicians! The Dutch Youth Orchestra, comprised of top talents between the ages of 14 and 20, will perform the most beautiful classical works on this tour. This winter, you can warm your ears and heart with the late Romanticism of Brahms and the symphonic world of Sibelius. Brahms’s Double Concerto was his final work for orchestra. And what a work it was! Violin and cello both excel and connect. The orchestra provides a strong foundation for the energetic movements and a velvety-soft undertone in the slower second movement. The soloists for the Double Concerto are Diana Fakour (violin) and Emma Naegele (cello). As Duo Vita, they won the NJON Prize at the Princess Christina Classical Competition in 2025. With their fluid interplay, musical persuasiveness, stage presence, and joy of playing, they effortlessly convinced the representatives of the National Youth Orchestras of the Netherlands (NJON) in the final that they deserved this prize.

The orchestra throws itself into a second masterpiece from the late 19th century: the imposing Symphony No. 1 by Sibelius. The work opens with a clarinet solo that sets the tone for the four-movement symphony in which many instruments are briefly put in the spotlight. Ideal moments for the young talents to showcase not only their orchestral playing, but also their solo qualities. In the fourth movement everything comes together again; the whole culminates in a grand, triumphant performance of energetic ensemble work – something a youth orchestra excels in.
