Jörgen van Rijen performs Meijering & Padding
Trombonist Jörgen van Rijen is an ambassador for his instrument. Mirrored in Time arose from a search for new repertoire. With the Alma Quartet, Van Rijen plays arrangements of work by Dowland, Schumann and more, as well as specially written new compositions by Chiel Meijering, JacobTV and others.
“Unfortunately, there is little chamber music for trombone,” says Jörgen van Rijen, solo trombonist of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. “That has to change.” Together with ‘the king of chamber music, the string quartet’, Van Rijen makes a start. In the Mirrored in Time program he always mirrors an existing work, which was not originally for trombone, with a brand new piece. So a double repertoire expansion. For example, an arrangement of Schumann’s Fantasiestücke sounds alongside Martijn Padding’s Schumann’s last procession. Florian Maier arranged Dvořák’s Serenade for strings for strings and trombone. He also composed a response: Fadenschein, ending in ‘folk music in an imaginary country’. Enough material for Van Rijen, praised by NRC for his ‘incredibly rich palette of color shades and surprising dynamic nuances’.
