Kris Oelbrandt: Catharsis
After the impressive The Crack (October 2022) and the restrained joyful Reaching out to Freedom (May 5, broadcast live by RTV Oost), music by Kris Oelbrandt will be heard again on June 17: the piano work Catharsis.
Kris Oelbrandt, composer and monk at the time (Trappist) in the abbey of Maria Toevlucht in Zundert, based the work Catharsis on the seventh chapter of the Rules for monks of Saint Benedict (480-547). It tells in twelve steps how a monk can ascend to true humility. The piano cycle begins very noisily, but ends in utter serenity; one experiences the music as a path of contemplation, purification and catharsis. Read here an interview with the composer in Volzin with more background on this work.
The work is performed by Cees-Willem van Vliet. Kris Oelbrandt himself will speak meditative texts for the individual parts.
At 3.15 pm the composer will give an introduction to the work.
