K. Oelbrandt: ‘Psalm 125’ & B. Michiels ‘De Profundis’

In the Kroonpen series, the Capella Brabant chamber choir goes in search of composers with a spiritual nature. The passion for religious traditions and meaning can be heard in their choral works. The main menu features Ralph Vaughan Williams’ majestic 1920-21 Mass in G Minor. The British composer follows the liturgical structure of the church mass, but adds his own mystical narrative power. As a convinced atheist, Vaughan Williams builds bridges between the spiritual past and present and writes a hopeful mass that will deeply touch everyone.

In addition to this misclassic, Capella Brabant has challenged two Flemish composers to write new, religiously tinted work. Former monk and composer Kris Oelbrandt has previously worked with Capella Brabant on his imposing Reconciliation Magnificat. Now he is writing a brand new choral work based on the poetic Psalm 125. The young composer Bart Michiels is a student at the AMPA in Tilburg. At the request of the choir and his teacher Anthony Fiumara, Michiels will consider his own version of the old De Profundis.

During Kroonpen, the choral music is traditionally framed with a special lecture, this time given by leading theologian and church historian Peter Nissen. In his essay he elaborates on the great inspiring effect of old religious texts and church rituals. Capella Brabant is led by conductor Marc Versteeg, with guest Sietse van Wijgerden on organ.
