Marion von Tilzer: 4 Bells For Freedom
Inspired by the message on the “Freedom Bell” in the Zuiderkerk Amsterdam—“Protect Freedom above all, O Amsterdam, so that you may be preserved”—and Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms, the participative artproject ‘4 Bells For Freedom’ invites residents of Amsterdam to engage in conversations about freedom.
The project’s aim is to stimulate dialogue through music, spoken word, discussions, and workshops, made possible by the commitment of a strong group of partners, such as the Amsterdam community art collective Moving Arts Project, the children’s choir Nieuw Vocaal Amsterdam, local neighborhood schools, artist Rob van den Broek, and actress Eva van Heijningen, Kamancheh player Soheil Shayesteh, ADAM string qwartet and many others.
Furthermore, speakers such as Linda Nooitmeer, Astrid Sy, and Rob Hartmans will participate during lecture-meetings at locations in the neighborhood. The project marks 80 years of liberation and the 750th anniversary of Amsterdam with an impressive performance and lasting involvement, so that the call to “protect and preserve freedom” can be heard everywhere in the city. On October 4, 2025, the community interaction, which takes place in July and September, everything will come together in the specially composed Liberty Cantata “Cantica Libertatis” by Marion von Tilzer.
