Maxim Shalygin: ‘ANGEL’ & ETUDE ‘AU VENT SUR LA POINTE DES PIEDS’
The aim of this recital is to present piano music by three generations of Ukrainian composers from the 20th and 21st centuries in Portugal for the first time. The program begins with music by Borys Lyatoshynskyi, founder of the Ukrainian school of modern composers, great melodist and symphonist. His 5 preludes op.44 were written during the Second World War during the evacuation of Kiev, his homeland. This is followed by pieces by his prominent student, Valentyn Silvestrov, some of which were recently composed in transparent “trifle style”, as well as the Second Sonata written in the 1970s in “universal style” (the composer’s term). The recital ends with music by his younger colleague, Maxim Shalygin. These pieces explore extreme forms of rhythms, dynamics and feelings that touch the soul deeply and give us hope.
