Maxim Shalygin: Burlesque on the Death of a Dictator
Maxim Shalygin is the Composer of The Hague as part of the 4th edition of the annual Composer’s Day (Dag van de Componist). On this occasion, there will be a premiere of Shalygin’s new piece ‘Burlesque on the Death of a Dictator’, at The Hague Central Station, performed by Neo-Fanfare 9X13. Later that day, at 20.15 in the Nieuwe Kerk in The Hague, there will be a performance of his SONGLESSNESS by organist Geerten Van de Wetering and the Amstel Quartet.
A train station hall transforms into a vibrant concert hall – that is what visitors to Den Haag Centraal can expect on Composer’s Day.
The concert opens with a performance by trombonists from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, who will play works by Dutch composer Martijn Padding. The Maat Saxophone Quartet will then perform, which will travel with the New Music NOW Express all day as a festival ensemble.
After a word of welcome by New Music NOW director Esther Gottschalk, spoken word artist Femi Dawklins will reflect on the theme of dictatorship, together with Martin Fondse and his ensemble.
The 10 musicians of NeoFanfare 9X13 will then present “Burlesque on the Death of a Dictator” by city composer Maxim Shalygin. Martin Fondse and Femi Dawkins will also present their work “This is Your Favourite Music Station” together with the Maat Saxophone Quartet, specially composed for The Day of the Composer and now a permanent part of every celebration. This dynamic mix of different ensembles and styles creates an experience in which the boundary between concert and theatrical performance blurs.
