Maxim Shalygin: Canti d’Inizio e Fine
At 21:00 you are welcome to a free concert in the context of the National Remembrance Day, in the Theater Royal. During this concert, Russian-born cellist Maya Fridman will play Canti d’Inizio e Fine, a moody, penetrating work by Ukrainian composer Maxim Shalygin.
The Angels of Death form the names of the six movements in the work, concluded by the epilogue of the Todesfuge, where Maya simultaneously sings and plays her cello. Maxim Shalygin composed this piece for ‘a solo performer who can feel, play, sing, scream, moan, swear, breathe, squeal, whisper, bleat, hiss, dream.’ and dedicated it to Maya.
The music is interspersed with poems and stories about war and liberation. These are nominated by Manouk Pluis. “Rend your clothes, you all, sprinkle your head with ashes, run through the streets and dance in madness.” — Rabbi Jakub Szulman in a letter, January 1942.
Maya Fridman is the winner of the Dutch Classical Talent Award 2019. The Volkskrant labeled Maya Fridman’s interpretation of Shalygin’s work as one of the musical highlights of 2019.
