Maxim Shalygin: Tristissima

Maxim Shalygin: Tristissima

Ready for the “conjuring, almost symbiotic interplay” of the Kāna Trio? With those laudatory words, jury chairman Frank van den Brink awarded them the main prize of the Grachtenfestival Conservatorium Concours 2022, and tonight the Portuguese-Dutch trio will prove why they have doubly earned it.

Cellist Ella van Poucke’s programme, with festival leader Caspar Vos at the keyboard, mixes old and new, including Tristissima, a work by Ukrainian composer Maxim Shalygin, who has previously been heard on Schiermonnikoog with Drop after Drop, his composition for Festivals of Compassion. The evening concludes with Rachmaninov’s glowing Cello Sonata.

Elena Langer: Seasons

Pianist Katya Apekisheva elegantly intertwines one of Tchaikovsky’s most charming compositions with the 2025 premiere of Elena Langer’s “Seasons.” Inspired by the evocative poetry of Philip Larkin, Langer’s work offers a contemporary dialogue with Tchaikovsky’s beloved cycle. This performance is a highlight of the Oxford May Music festival. Program Peter Tchaikovsky – The Seasons, op.
