Maxim Shalygin: While combing your hair

Welcome Peter Dijkstra! The new artistic director is well known to the BR Choir, as he held this office from 2005 to 2016. For his »second debut«, the versatile Dutch conductor has placed the great hymn to freedom by Francis Poulenc on the moving Résistance poem by Paul Éluard at the center of the programme.

A wide arc is drawn from the famous lamentations of the Munich Renaissance court conductor Orlando di Lasso to Stravinsky’s neoclassical Psalms Symphony (in the version for choir and piano by Dmitri Shostakovich authorized by the composer) to the brand-new choral setting by the Ukrainian-Dutch composer Maxim Shalygin, who is the Dedicated to Belarusian civil rights activist Maria Kolesnikova.

A Singer’s Farewell Semi-staged performance with beautiful music from the Romantic period. There was a time when increasing age meant wisdom and respect. That is no longer self-evident. Singing at the highest level has a limited duration. At some point, singers say goodbye to the family from which they seemed inseparable.
