Natalie Dietterich: soldier/sailor
Natalie Dietterich’s piece Soldier/sailor will be performed by the University of Tennessee Percussion Ensemble at The Midwest Clinic in McCormick Center, Chicago.
Soldier/sailor is a piece written for Sõ Percussion that reconciles multiple rhythmic grids at once. It is deeply inspired by music I studied closely as part of my dissertation research: non-classical genres that inhabit this kind of “rhythmic trickery” space of multiple grooves, particularly by music in the math/rock/fusion genres such as Their Dogs Were Astronauts and Meshuggah, as well as by Tigran Hamasyan’s compositional language. Much of my chamber music explores these ideas and challenges performers and audience members alike to expand and question their understanding of rhythmic perception.
