
Nestor Taylor: Ouverture from opera Eleni
Festival concert for the 40th anniversary of the Leipzig – Thessaloniki city partnership.
The town twinning between Leipzig and Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece, was established in the GDR as early as 1984. This lively city partnership is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year! The festival concert on February 3rd, 2024 at 5 p.m. in the Leipzig Bethanienkirche will be organized by the Saxon Wind Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of the Greek guest conductor Myron Michailidis. The overture to the opera “Eleni” by the Greek composer Nestor Taylor will be heard, as well as works such as the Hellenic Polka by Johann Strauss (son), two movements from the 9th Symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich, and the overture to the opera “La Forza del Destino” by Giusepe Verdi, the Morning Song and Procession of the Armies by Richard Wagner and five Greek dances by the Greek national composer Nikos Skalkottas.
The event is organized by the city of Leipzig (International Cooperation Department), the Leipzig-Thessaloniki city twinning association and the “Friends of the Saxon Bläserphilharmonie” support association. V.” and the church council of the Bethanienkirchengemeinde.
