Niek Idelenburg; Mondriaan Dances
America has always had great appeal for European artists and musicians. The beginning of the 20th century was no exception! To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Piet Mondrian’s birth, SoundWave Collective offers a modern, but also nostalgic look into the world of Mondrian in the early 1940s in New York.
We travel back in time with songs by Gershwin and others in combination with works by Piet Mondrian and visual material from New York in the 1940s.
Mondrian’s great passion was ballroom dancing on Saturday nights. The programme therefore begins with Stravinsky’s “Danses Concertantes” danced by the award-winning Cuban modern dance company, Otro Lado. Interwoven between sections of this rhythmic music are songs by Porter and Gershwin sung by the talented crooner, Andrew Toth.
Inspired by the letters Mondriaan wrote about his love for dancing Niek Idelenburg composed a Suite for Windensemble: Mondriaan Dances.
