Six Variations on Shalom Aleichem is part of Relocations: polyphony and identity, a site-specific multimedia performance-installation by Yael Levy and Nikos Kokolakis.
Relocations: polyphony and identity was funded by the Municipality of Chania and the Cultural Organization of Chania Municipality – Center for Mediterranean Architecture as part of the program Ανοιχτά Πανιά (Full Sails) and it was premiered by Giorgos Samoilis (baroque vln), Katerina Orfanoudaki (hpsd), and the Cantilena Vocal Choir at the Synagogue Etz Hayyim in Chania, in September 2022.
Etz Hayyim is the only testament to a rich Cretan Jewish heritage that lasted for over 2000 years throughout the periods of Roman, Byzantine, Andalusian Arab, Venetian and Ottoman control of the island and which almost came to an abrupt end in 1944 during the German Occupation. It was rededicated in 1999.
