Petra Strahovnik: Sense-S

Sense-S

The project Sense-S intertwines 2 works; the centre piece ‘Sense’ written for an Orchestra and the piece ‘Senses’, an Overture and a Finale, written for an Orchestra, a Tape and a Magician. It features engaging art disciplines for divergent audiences, babies, toddlers, vulnerable groups such as people with autism and new public, which are structured subtly to involve as many human senses as possible. A subtle and inviting atmosphere is created where borders between the performer and audience blend and mix to where the listener becomes an active performer and the musicians become active listeners.

When we are born, everything is new, therefore the feeling of astonishment and wonder is our base reality. Through learning about the world we live in, we create an enormous amount of “boxes”, in other words, we understand how things work, what fits where, etc. With all this knowledge and understanding, the feeling of astonishment and wonder degrades and is barely present in most of us. Fostering a childlike wonder as an adult seems almost unattainable, however all we need to do is observe babies and toddlers and connect with them and find our inner child again with all its potential.

Composer has to be true to her/himself, connect with the inner self, trust her/his instincts and follow the vision. I started to create this piece in a gallery in Bamberg, where I had been composing for 20 days straight. Being sensitive, expressing tendency, disposition, function, connection in front of the public eyes and finding faculties by which the body perceives an external stimulus. With a subtle performance, the attention of the musicians is to search for wonder, wonder in details of the musical material, wonder in cocreating the piece, search for being in the present moment and being aware of every sound appearing in the space.

The excerpt of the project The Eternal NOW: I will place myself to the eyes of the public and let the performance influence the creativity and the composition itself every day for 20 days. The idea is to write a piece for an orchestra. The intensity of the writing, the intensity of the piece itself and the unknown place of being exposed to the audience in the most intimate moments of creating is exciting frontier for a composer. My intention is to maintain authenticity and uniqueness, while capturing the presence and awareness.

The hand written score is hanging in Villa Concordia in Bamberg, where I was in Art residency, while writing this piece.

A Singer’s Farewell Semi-staged performance with beautiful music from the Romantic period. There was a time when increasing age meant wisdom and respect. That is no longer self-evident. Singing at the highest level has a limited duration. At some point, singers say goodbye to the family from which they seemed inseparable.
