Pijper: Zes symfonische epigrammen
“Do you know that when I play Mozart, I feel more cheerful and younger?” Tchaikovsky wrote. That is why he saluted Mozart with his Variations on a Rococo theme, a bold work for cello and orchestra, elegant, graceful and dancing. Franz Liszt was at the premiere and thought: ‘This is real music!’ The music by Willem Pijper is preceded by music by Willem Pijper for the 40th anniversary of the Concertgebouw in 1928, and after the intermission Anton Bruckner’s painful farewell to the world and life.
