Rick van Veldhuizen: Nulls & Voids

The 3-day Bruckner Casco Festival, which will start on 13 September 2024, aims to bring new music to the attention of a wider audience. It does so by cross-pollinating the inspiration of a new generation of contemporary composers on one of the symphonic icons of the 19th century, Anton Bruckner. Ten young contemporary composers, including Maxim Shalygin, each adopt one of Bruckner’s symphonies and write their vision on it for an ensemble of 7 to 20 musicians.

On Saturday 14 September, Ensemble Klang will perform the new composition: ‘Nulls and Voids’, re-arranged by composer Rick van Veldhuizen. Rick on his new composition: ‘Nulls and Voids‘ will be a radical reworking of the material from Bruckner’s so-called ‘Nulde‘ symphony, which he declared invalid during his lifetime and therefore was not performed until 1924 – one hundred years before ‘Bruckner Casco’. As such, the piece will be about musical memory and association: all the material in the symphony actually becomes a ‘found object’ in Nulls and Voids, but the genesis of the work, and Bruckner’s biography, also come into play as found objects.
