Rieteke Hölscher: Aquatones
About Aquatones:
With Aquatones I wanted to write an empathetic piece, inspired by composers from the past. In addition, water – just like art – does not always have to be beautiful. For the Impressionists, water is usually a calm babbling stream, not waves crashing against the coastline like a tsunami. But water is versatile: you can swim in it when it is warm (also when it is cold!), but you can also drown in it. It quenches thirst, but at the same time threatens the coasts in stormy times. Fog, rain, snow, even hail, all of that is water.
I myself imagine water as something comforting: just as one can feel like a better person by contemplating natural beauty with landscapes full of impressive glaciers, waterfalls, cool blue deep lakes and distant oceans. Moreover, water can sometimes give me the cooling comfort I need, without getting soaking wet… But misty wet is okay…
