The twelve singers of project choir VoxNL, led by Hanneke Hommes and in collaboration with Helene Egberts on piano and accordion, sing existing and own work in the interactive singing performance ‘Water Moves’, improvise and invite the audience to actively participate in the concert.

Water is the primal force behind all life on earth – especially in Holland. Water gives and takes, lashes and nourishes, shapes our landscape and determines how we live, work and recreate. On and around the water we provide for our livelihood, we love, we celebrate life and we mourn what is lost and will not return.

‘Water moves’ describes one day in the eternal water cycle: from the morning in which the mist slowly lifts from the ditches until nightfall when only the soft lapping of our rowing boat can be heard.

Composer Diederik van der Laag developed soundscapes together with the choir, in which the audience can also participate. These connect the songs with each other, creating one large stream of sounds. The singers perform music by Hendrik and Jurriaan Andriessen, Ramses Shaffy, Herman Strategier, Samuel Barber, Henk Stoeten, Rita Hijmans, Max Knigge and more. What is special is that a number of choir members wrote songs themselves, others retranslated existing pieces, and some, including the conductor, rearranged pieces.
