Rudolf Escher: Sonate for cello solo

However much the composers Escher and Brahms differ, they have in common that they were extremely critical of their own work. For example, Escher withdrew many of his works, even if they had already been published, because on closer inspection they did not meet his standards. Fortunately, the solo sonata for cello, dedicated to the nestor of the Dutch cello playing Carel van Leeuwen Boomkamp, withstood his critical eye. Cellist Gideon den Herder is a passionate advocate of this special work.
