Saskia Venegas: The White Lotus

Last year, the renowned Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho passed away. A true musical poet who subtly unraveled the expression and poetry of pure sound. Her work was still central during November Music 2021 with a commissioned work that ultimately became one of her very last compositions. The Flemish companies I Solisti and the Spectra Ensemble pay warm tribute to her revolutionary, beautiful music. For many female composers, the visionary power of Saariaho’s work is a lasting source of inspiration.

During this concert, this dream combination will therefore put several leading young female composers in the spotlight. The main focus is their performance of Solar (1993) by Kaija Saariaho. With this masterpiece for large ensemble, Saariaho defies the laws of gravity. Uplifting, radiant music in which a refined play with the magnetic attraction of harmony is unleashed.

In addition to this masterpiece from the twentieth century, which is rarely heard live, the Flemish companies will perform a brand new work by the prominent Belgian composer Annelies Van Parys. She writes the work Threnody, which is inspired by an epic lament by Josquin Desprez. Commissioned by November Music, the Spanish-Belgian composer Saskia Venegas presents a world premiere. With The White Lotus she pays tribute to her teacher Wim Henderickx. In addition, new work by the Belgian composer Ellen Jacobs is a silent tribute to Saariaho’s spatial visions.

In collaboration with Transit Festival Leuven.

In the context of Sounds Now. Co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme
