Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato
Composer Simeon ten Holt worked on the composition Canto Ostinato for four years. The Matangi Quartet had the work translated for their string quartet. During the concert, artist Gerard de Bruyne takes the music on stage as inspiration for a temporary work of art.Canto
Ostinato literally means ‘stubborn song’. This stubbornness can also refer to the period of four years that Simeon ten Holt worked on his composition. The Matangi Quartet was the first to record the piece of music and is now performing it to mark the 20th anniversary of the string quartet. But ‘ostinato’ also refers to the composition itself, in which the same rhythm can always be felt. As a result, you end up in a kind of trance in which time and space seem to separate from each other.
Simeon ten Holt is part of an artist family from Bergen in North Holland. His father was a painter, just as his brother still is. To further emphasize the dynamics of the music, the Matangi Quartet asked the artist Gerard de Bruyne to compose a line pattern inspired by the music on stage. On the projection you see a temporary work of art arise, which will also disappear after the last tones. This makes every concert a unique experience.
