Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato
In the last Seinconcert of the season on Friday 3 June, the neighbors of the Morgenster in Hilversum will play Simeon ten Holts’ popular masterpiece Canto Ostinato in a special performance with piano, percussion (marimba, vibraphone, glockenspiel), violin, viola and cello.
Simeon ten Holt, the composer who died in November 2012 at the age of 89, worked on Canto Ostinato in the 1970s. The piece was first performed in 1979 for three pianos and organ. However, the exact line-up is free and can vary from one piano to four pianos, marimbas, saxophones, cellos, harp, etc, etc. During the performance of Canto Ostinato, decisions in the performance are left to the musicians with the option to to make it last.
A performance of this piece is thus a challenge for the musicians: both technically and in terms of concentration a lot is asked of them. For the audience it is a moment of dreaming and meditating. Canto Ostinato is considered to be minimalist music and is one of the most famous works of contemporary Dutch classical music. This concert is perfect for lying down or hanging out. Bean bags are provided. Feel free to bring pillows!
