Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato
The Canto Ostinato by the Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt is a work of variable length. The piece consists of short musical motifs that are repeated over and over (‘ostinato’). In this contemporary classical music, Ten Holt used harmonies that are easy on the ear. The performers can choose themselves on which instruments they play the piece. Each performance of the Canto is different: while playing, the musicians decide which way the piece will go. This performance is played by Annemieke IJzerman on harp and Esther Doornink and Peter Elbertse on marimba. In this unusual line-up, the enchanting meditative sounds of the Canto Ostinato are wonderfully expressed. All the way in the open air on a spring evening, when the birds are singing along.
