Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato
Two church organs and a piano will be played on Friday 28 October in the Sint Willibrorduskerk in Deurne during the performance of the Canto Ostinato. During the concert, the church on the Markt is lit with candles that evening and images of the painting series ‘In the ban van de Aa’ by Emelie Jegerings and Jolanda Thielens are shown.
The Canto Ostinato will be performed in Deurne by Martien Maas on the grand piano, Bert Augustus on the Smits organ and Arjan Mooij on the choir organ.
Canto Ostinato is a minimalist piece of music by the Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt (1923-2012). It was composed between 1973 and 1976 under the name Perpetuum. A few months before the first performance, the title Canto Ostinato was chosen. Canto (cantata) refers to the melody or a short musical motif; Ostinato refers to repetition.
