Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato
Composed by the Dutchman Simeon ten Holt, Canto Ostinato is a unique work. Originally written for keyboard instruments, it can be performed by different ensembles and also by more or fewer performers, the most common version being for two or four pianos.
The work is usually considered minimalist in origin, due to its repetitive structure and recognizable ostinato, although the composer used the term “genetic code” due to the way in which the work is constructed. With a different duration in each performance, depending on the preferences of the musicians, it can last between one and two hours.
All this makes up what is special about the work: each interpretation will always be different from the previous ones.
