Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato (arrangement by Anthony Fiumara)
The young Dutch-Israeli composer Karmit Fadael composed a lyrical and slightly exotic concerto for orchestra and the instrument she plays herself: the violin, especially for the North Netherlands Orchestra. When composing, she had the sound of the young violinist Pieter van Loenen in mind, winner of the Dutch Classical Talent Audience Award 2019, among others.
Canto Ostinato by the Dutch composer Simeon ten Holst is an unparalleled classical hit; Anyone who saw the documentary About Canto knows how much this music means to enthusiasts. The work is usually performed in a version for two or four grand pianos. However, it was not suitable for orchestra; After all, the musicians always have to make decisions on the spot about, for example, the number of repetitions of a passage. Until composer Anthony Fiumara, as composer in residence of the North Netherlands Orchestra, made a version for orchestra in 2016.
