Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato (Black Forest Percussion Group)
The Black Forest Percussion Group presents a concert project honoring the 50th anniversary of Simeon ten Holt’s monumental work, Canto Ostinato (1976–1979). Taking place in 2026 at the Elisabeth-Schneider-Stiftung in Freiburg, this concert offers a fresh perspective on a landmark piece of Minimal Music and contemporary composition.
Originally composed for two to four pianos, Ten Holt authorized numerous arrangements for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. The work is based on repetitive patterns (ostinati) layered in a hypnotic fashion. These fixed ostinati can be combined in various ways, giving the piece an open structure that blurs the lines between composition and improvisation.
