Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato (Dré Wapenaar)
Dré Wapenaar (sculptor, installation artist and pianist) was a close friend of Simeon ten Holt (1923-2012).
He writes about this concert:
I became friends with Simeon in the year 2000,
when I was still working on the plans for the construction of the Four-wing Pavilion.
I was finally able to build this pavilion, designed for Simeon’s compositions for 4 grand pianos,
in 2004, the premiere was during the Festival Boulevard in Den Bosch.
It became an intensive friendship until his death in 2012.
Every month we discussed, in passing,
the various performances of his works.
We sometimes used the grand piano to illustrate, to go through pieces.
Actually, never with the idea that I would perform pieces of it myself.
In the meantime, I did get a grip on a number of his works and I was able to
play Canto in its entirety. This happened for the first time at the Oerol Festival 2012 together with piano partner Peter van Russen Groen, and in another piano pavilion that I had designed and built for
2 grand pianos.
(That is the Recital Pavilion from 2008, premiere Poetry Festival Rotterdam)
It is only in recent years that I have started giving solo concerts,
And now Canto Ostinato is on the program.
