Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato (Ludens)

Canto Ostinato—who isn’t moved by it? It feels as if you are allowed to tune into an eternal music. At the same time, every performance is different. In the Dominican Church, you may have already heard versions for organ, both with and without voices. In this candlelight concert, you will hear an arrangement for piano and choir! Timeless, yet always unique. Canto Ostinato is preceded by other beautiful choral works, partly accompanied by vibraphone.

CANTO

“Time becomes space in which the musical object begins to float…” (Ten Holt)

Vocal Ensemble Ludens on the program:

In this program, we are delighted to reprise our vocal version of Simeon ten Holt’s Canto Ostinato. In 2022, composer Diederik van der Laag, in collaboration with pianist Victor Lange, created a vocal version accompanied by a single piano for our ensemble. The aim was to provide space for a free creative flow in the moment of performance.

The Canto is introduced by Diederik’s work Daughter of the Vine, in which the sound of singing wine glasses leads us into the world of the Canto.

Prior to that, Ludens will sing several beautiful choral works, partly accompanied by vibraphone. We will perform two movements from Ochre, the brand-new cycle by acclaimed American composer Caroline Shaw. Her expressive and experimental use of the voice—based on repeating fragments and sound textures accompanied by vibraphone—pairs beautifully with the powerful work There are some men by Philip Glass, who is renowned for his minimal music. The prayer about the night, När natten skänker frid, written by Karin Rehnqvist, brings us into a dreamlike atmosphere. Finally, Victor has rehearsed an improvisation with us, created specifically for this program based on texts and rhythmic-melodic elements.
