Simeon Ten Holt: Canto Ostinato (Natalon Kwartet)

The name of the Natalon Quartet refers to the piano composition Natalon in E that Simeon ten Holt composed shortly after Canto Ostinato in 1980. Natalon in E is a lively piece in which beautiful melodies alternate with almost minimalist sound fluctuations that seem to foreshadow the characters of later compositions. Natalon also refers to an older composition by Simeon that he wrote in an atonal style period: A/.ta-lon (1968) for mezzo-soprano and 36 playing and talking instrumentalists.

Natalon Kwartet will perform Canto Ostinato in open air theater Caprera in Bloemendaal.

Especially on the occasion of ‘100 years of Simeon ten Holt’, the Amstel Quartet joins the Natalon Quartet this evening and they perform Incantation IV with eight of them.

Simeon ten Holt

Simeon ten Holt was born in Bergen on January 24, 1923. He studied piano and theory with Jakob van Domselaer (1890-1960). In 1949 he moved to Paris where he received lessons at the École Normale with Arthur Honegger and Darius Milhaud. From 1970 to 1987 he taught contemporary music at the Academy of Visual Arts in Arnhem.
