Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato (Natalon Quartet)

Canto Ostinato by Simeon ten Holt is a masterpiece that is unparalleled in modern classical music. Composed between 1977 and 1979, especially for keyboard instruments, the piano is the ultimate means for Ten Holt to bring his musical vision to life. The work consists of repeating measure groups, where the pianists determine on the spot how they shape the music. This makes each version unique and full of surprises.

Performed by the only four-wing quartet in the world

What makes the performance of this reclining concerto in Arnhem so special is that it is played by four pianists on four grand pianos. The Natalon Quartet is the only permanent four-wing quartet worldwide and has more than 20 years of experience in performing Ten Holt’s works. The deep connection with his music is partly due to pianist Robert Lambermont, who was a personal friend of Ten Holt. He called Robert “one of the warmest advocates of my music.” The quartet remains faithful to the composer’s original intentions, giving their performances an unprecedented authenticity.

With four grand pianos and subtle interplay, the pianists create a breathtaking experience that takes both musicians and audience on a musical journey. Every concert of Canto Ostinato is a once-in-a-lifetime experience in which sounds and emotions come together again and again in a magical whole.
