Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato (pianoduo Kaspers & Hibma)
In Cultuurpodium Dorpskerk Huizum, Wiebe Kaspers and Johannes Hibma, each on a grand piano, will (again) give a performance of the ‘Canto Ostinato’, the well-known composition by the Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt (1923 – 2012).
This piece was composed in the 1970s under the name ‘Perpetuum’, but a few months before the first performance the title ‘Canto Ostinato’ was chosen. This time it is performed again on two grand pianos.
Canto refers to the melody or a short musical motif; Ostinato refers to repetition. The piece seems to be born again and again. The frameworks are fixed, but through the constant eye and ear contact of Wiebe Kaspers and Johannes Hibma, the piece in Huizum is, as it were, created anew.
‘The Canto’ continues and is never actually finished. Let yourself be carried away by the enchanting and meditative sounds. Those sounds are almost an oasis of peace. We are heading together towards winter, which will almost arrive when the concert is over.
