Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato (Sandra & Jeroen van Veen)

Canto Ostinato is by far the most popular classical work of Dutch origin. It is music that changes lives, as seen in the film About Canto. Not for nothing has the piece been in the top-10 of the NPO Radio 4 Hart en Ziel Lijst for years, an annual selection of the finest three hundred works of classical music chosen by listeners. By the way, we should put the term “classical” in quotation marks. What is special about Canto Ostinato is that it has always appealed to a varied musical audience.

At this concert, Canto Ostinato will be performed on two grand pianos by Sandra and Jeroen van Veen, a perfectly attuned duo that has recorded the work many times on CD. The audience is seated in a lounge-like setting around the musicians. Live, it is a delightful experience to leisurely dream away to the meditative sounds of Ten Holt’s masterpiece. The light color variations during the concert match beautifully with the ever-changing feelings Sandra and Jeroen evoke from behind their wings.

When you think of Indonesia, the spicy scents of the oriental kitchen probably come to mind. But perhaps also wajang puppets, chirping monkeys swinging through the jungle, or a volcano that could erupt at any moment. Or the traditional dances in beautiful clothing.
