Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato (Simple Music Ensemble)
On February 9th, the iconic work “Canto Ostinato”, written in 1967 by the Dutch minimalist Simeon ten Holt, will be performed at the Theater im Delphi. The unusual structure of the composition is based on the principle of “ostinato”, i.e. H. the repetition of one or more basic musical themes throughout the work without change or development. The work consists of 106 short musical blocks, which are repeated and alternated at the musicians’ discretion. The score serves more as a guide or rough guide, which is why each performance of “Canto Ostinato” is unique.
This work does not exist in its complete form: the composition of instruments and the number of performers may vary, and the duration of the work can range from an hour and a half to a day. For February 9th we are preparing a 1.5-hour version of Canto Ostinato for two marimbas and two vibraphones especially for the guests of the Theater in Delphi.
This unusual composition will create a unique sound palette full of bright melodies, polyphony and energy.
